Of course there WAS no New York City in 1609, but National Geographic published a fascinating article in its September issue, depicting what the land would have looked like before it was settled. Below is the link to the article online. Be sure to look at the picture gallery, which has some great artist's portraits of the land that is now NYC when it was truly a colonial backwoods !
