Plants surviving -20 degrees « Thread Started on May 3, 2009, 8:01am »
We had a harsh winter, and one night the temperature actually went down to -20 degrees (as low as -24 in some areas here). Did anyone else have this harsh a temperature extreme, and if so, how did your plants survive ? I am VERY relieved to say that our Kentucky river cane survived! It is not native to Central Ohio (we transplanted it from the site of Simon Kenton's cabin in Old Washington, Kentucky - the visitor's center there used to sell buckets of it for $5). We now have over 40 shoots of cane rapidly growing in our cane patch. My trumpet vine made it through the Big Chill as well - though only the part of the vine that was sheltered by the snow seems to have survived. It will have no problem growing new tendrils. I hope everyone else had the same good luck with their plants !

20 below is not at all un-common here in the Rockies... its those occasional winters where we get 30 below, and it HOLDS @ 30 below for a week or two that we get problems...
